Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1976 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a rare mature Mosel sweet wine from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyards. Produced from carefully selected late-harvest Riesling grapes and finished with the distinctive Goldkapsel designation, it offers remarkable depth, richness and the complexity that only decades of bottle age can bring.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting its long maturation in bottle. Its aromatic profile is layered and expressive, with notes of honey, ripe peach, baked apple and citrus complemented by the mellow, evolved character of a mature Riesling.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, balanced by refreshing acidity that keeps the sweetness poised and lively. A long, lingering finish reveals further honeyed fruit and citrus nuances. Properly stored, this 1976 Auslese may continue to offer a fascinating drinking experience, although it is best enjoyed now for its mature character.
Production
The grapes come from the steep, slate-rich slopes of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard in the Mosel, a site renowned for producing elegant, intensely flavoured Rieslings with excellent ageing potential. As an Auslese, the wine was made from selectively harvested, fully ripe grapes; the Goldkapsel designation indicates an especially distinguished selection. Further specific details regarding the harvest and vinification are not available.
Food & Serving
Its combination of richness and vibrant acidity makes it an excellent partner for delicately flavoured fish, roasted or lightly spiced poultry and mature or blue cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative dessert wine. Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, but careful decanting may help separate any sediment and allow the wine to open before serving.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, celebrated for its precise, long-lived Rieslings from premier vineyards around Bernkastel. The estate is particularly associated with Wehlener Sonnenuhr, whose steep slate terraces produce wines known for their finesse, mineral character and exceptional longevity. This 1976 bottling represents a historic vintage from a producer with an enduring reputation for premium German Riesling.
