Description

Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1959 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is a rare example of mature Mosel Riesling from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from selected, naturally sweet grapes, this historic wine combines remarkable concentration with the freshness needed for graceful bottle ageing—a captivating choice for collectors and lovers of mature sweet wines.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and development in bottle. Its complex bouquet brings together aromas of ripe yellow fruit, honey and delicate spice, with the evolved character expected from a Riesling of this vintage. On the palate, it is rich, sweet and full-bodied, balanced by a pleasant vein of acidity that keeps the wine lively rather than heavy. The finish is long and persistent, with layers of mature fruit, honeyed sweetness and spice. As a nearly seven-decade-old wine, its condition and remaining ageing potential will depend greatly on provenance and storage, but it is best approached as a mature bottle to enjoy now.

Production
The grapes come from Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a steep, south-facing Mosel vineyard renowned for its slate soils, excellent exposure and ability to produce Rieslings of both intensity and longevity. As an Auslese, the wine was made from carefully selected, fully ripe grapes with a naturally high level of sweetness. Specific details of the 1959 harvest and vinification are not available, but the wine’s balance of richness and acidity reflects the classic style of fine Mosel Riesling.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing its aromas and mature sweetness to unfold in the glass. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apple or pear tarts, crème brûlée and blue cheese, while its complexity also makes it rewarding as an aperitif. Because of its age, stand the bottle upright before opening and decant only carefully, if needed, to remove sediment; otherwise, gentle pouring is preferable to extended aeration.

Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing reputation for producing elegant, intensely flavoured Rieslings from prestigious vineyard sites. The estate is particularly associated with Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a historic location whose steep slate slopes are prized for wines that unite sweetness, precision and exceptional longevity. This 1959 Auslese offers a distinctive glimpse of the producer’s enduring style and of Mosel winemaking from a landmark vintage era.
