Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1976 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel is a rare, intensely sweet Mosel wine from one of Germany’s most respected Riesling estates. Made from botrytised, selectively harvested grapes and finished with the estate’s distinctive Goldkapsel designation, this mature dessert wine offers a remarkable combination of richness, freshness and historical character.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, often developing amber or copper highlights with age. Its mature bouquet is layered with honey, dried apricot, peach preserves and candied citrus, complemented by hints of caramel, beeswax and delicate tertiary notes.
On the palate, it is luxuriously sweet and concentrated, balanced by the vibrant acidity characteristic of the Mosel. Rich stone-fruit flavours lead to a long, lingering finish with notes of honey, citrus zest and dried fruit. With more than four decades of bottle age, this Beerenauslese is mature and ready to enjoy, while well-stored examples may continue to evolve gracefully.
Production
Sourced from the steep, slate-rich Graacher Himmelreich vineyard in the Mosel, the wine benefits from the site’s cool climate and excellent exposure, which help preserve acidity in even the ripest vintages. Beerenauslese is produced from individually selected, overripe Riesling grapes, often affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates sugars and flavours. The Goldkapsel designation indicates an especially selective and richly concentrated cuvée. As a historic bottle, its present condition will depend greatly on provenance and storage.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its aromas to unfold. Decanting is generally not necessary, although a careful pour can help separate any natural sediment and briefly aerate the wine if desired. Its sweetness and acidity make it a superb match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apricot or peach tart, foie gras and rich blue cheeses. It is also compelling on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine.
Producer
Founded in 1911, Joh. Jos. Prüm has become one of the landmark names of the Mosel, renowned for elegant, long-lived Rieslings from prestigious vineyards around Bernkastel and Graach. The estate is particularly celebrated for wines that combine crystalline fruit, pronounced slate character and lively acidity with exceptional ageing potential. Graacher Himmelreich remains one of its most distinguished sites, and a 1976 Beerenauslese Goldkapsel represents a rare opportunity to experience the estate’s historic style at great maturity.
