Description
Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1971 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel is a rare, mature Mosel dessert wine from one of Germany’s most respected Riesling producers. Made from exceptionally selected, botrytised grapes and presented in the prestigious Goldkapsel style, it offers remarkable concentration, sweetness and depth—an evocative example of classic German Prädikatswein from the early 1970s.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its age and concentration. Its complex bouquet combines ripe and dried fruit with honeyed notes, subtle spice and the rich, layered character associated with mature Beerenauslese. On the palate, it is sweet, concentrated and beautifully balanced by a refreshing thread of Riesling acidity. The finish is long and lingering, with evolving notes of honey, ripe fruit and spice.
At more than five decades old, this is a fully mature wine best appreciated for its complexity and finesse rather than further development. Properly stored bottles may continue to offer pleasure, although condition and provenance are especially important with a wine of this age.
Production
The Graacher Himmelreich vineyard is a renowned Mosel site, characterised by steep slopes and slate-rich soils that encourage Riesling grapes to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity. Beerenauslese is produced from individually selected, overripe grapes, typically affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates sugars and flavour. The Goldkapsel designation indicates an especially distinguished, highly concentrated selection within the producer’s range. Specific harvesting and cellar details for this 1971 bottling are not provided.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it an excellent partner for fruit-based desserts, apple tart, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not usually necessary, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help leave any natural sediment undisturbed.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most renowned estates of the Mosel, celebrated internationally for precise, long-lived Rieslings from exceptional vineyard sites. Based in the village of Wehlen, the family producer is particularly associated with elegant wines from steep slate vineyards, including Graacher Himmelreich. Its Beerenauslese and Goldkapsel bottlings are prized for their rarity, concentration and ability to develop beautifully over decades.
