Description

Joh. Jos. Prüm’s 1937 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese is a remarkable piece of Mosel wine history. Made from carefully selected grapes in one of Bernkastel’s most renowned vineyards, this exceptionally mature Riesling offers a rare opportunity to experience the character of a pre-war vintage that has developed over more than eight decades.

Tasting Notes
The wine is described as showing a luminous golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and evolution in bottle. Its mature bouquet combines ripe peach and apricot with rich honeyed notes, while a subtle mineral character adds depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine balances natural sweetness with refreshing acidity, giving it remarkable vitality despite its age. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering fruit, honey and mineral nuances. As a wine from 1937, it is already fully mature and is best enjoyed for its developed character; careful storage and bottle condition will be important factors in its continued performance.

Production
Bernkasteler Badstube is a historic Mosel vineyard known for its steep slopes and mineral-rich soils, conditions that are particularly well suited to Riesling. The wine was produced as an Auslese from selectively harvested, fully ripe grapes, although the precise harvesting and vinification details for this 1937 bottle are not documented here. Its remarkable longevity is a testament to the grape’s natural acidity and the careful production traditions associated with great Mosel Riesling.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to unfold in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and blue or mature cheeses. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not usually essential for an old Riesling, but standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a brief airing in the bottle or a small glass is preferable to prolonged decanting.

Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with a long-standing reputation for producing Rieslings of purity, elegance and exceptional ageing potential. The estate is closely associated with the great vineyards around Bernkastel and with the traditional expression of Mosel Riesling. This 1937 Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese represents both the historic significance of the producer and the extraordinary cellaring potential for which the finest wines of the region are known.
