Why shop with us?
KA takes its name from Carignan, a grape rarely bottled on its own but given a compelling voice here by vines more than 110 years old. First conceived by Marc Kreydenweiss and refined by his son Jean, this biodynamic Languedoc red shows how old-vine Carignan can offer depth and character as well as freshness.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with a faintly savoury, animal note that recedes with air, revealing dark red berries and ripe black cherries. With time, aromas of plum compote, violet, cardamom, cinnamon and earthy spice emerge.
On the palate, the fruit is juicy and concentrated, with full, gently crumbly tannins and a velvety texture. Despite its depth, it remains fresh, fine and harmonious, with a notably moderate 12.5% alcohol. No specific cellaring window is provided; its freshness and structure make it enjoyable now with aeration.
Production
The old Carignan vines grow near Manduel on iron-rich gravel with traces of slate, flint, sandstone, quartzite and limestone. Farmed biodynamically since 1999, they are selectively hand-harvested for a small, concentrated crop. A short maceration and spontaneous fermentation are followed by élevage in 600-litre oak barrels; Jean Kreydenweiss uses gentler extraction to preserve the wine’s subtlety.
Food & Serving
A food-friendly red for roast lamb, grilled sausages, herb-seasoned vegetables or dishes with mushrooms and earthy spices. Serve at around 16–18°C. Give it 30–60 minutes in a decanter, or allow it to open in the glass, to let the initial savoury note fade and the fruit and floral aromas unfold.
Producer
Marc Kreydenweiss began the KA project after taking over a parcel of very old Carignan vines in 1999. His son Jean now runs the estate and has refined the wine’s style with a lighter touch in extraction. The family’s work highlights the quality potential of Languedoc’s less-celebrated sites and of old-vine Carignan, a grape more often used in blends than made as a varietal wine.
