Description

Jacques Rousseaux Champagne Grand Cru Montgolfiere Extra Brut is a finely poised grower Champagne that brings together power and finesse in equal measure. Crafted from an even blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this Grand Cru cuvée showcases the purity and precision of top Champagne vineyards. With its Extra Brut dosage, it leans toward a dry, mineral-driven style that highlights terroir rather than sweetness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne presents a luminous pale gold color with a fine, persistent bead and an elegant, creamy mousse. The nose opens with citrus zest, green apple, and white flowers, followed by subtle notes of brioche, chalk, and a hint of red berries from the Pinot Noir. On the palate, the 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is immediately apparent: Pinot Noir brings structure, depth, and a gentle red-fruited juiciness, while Chardonnay contributes lift, freshness, and precision. Expect flavors of lemon curd, crisp pear, and grapefruit alongside hints of wild strawberry, toasted almond, and a saline, chalky minerality. The Extra Brut style (very low dosage) keeps the finish dry, taut, and refreshing, with a long, mouthwatering aftertaste. Enjoy now for its tension and energy, or cellar for 3–6 years to allow the fruit and autolytic complexity (brioche, pastry notes) to deepen further.

Production
Sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in the heart of the Champagne region in France, this cuvée is rooted in chalk-rich soils that lend precision, minerality, and tension to the wine. Pinot Noir (50%) and Chardonnay (50%) are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve both freshness and aromatic purity. After gentle pressing, the base wines are fermented in temperature-controlled conditions to retain delicate fruit character, followed by extended aging on the lees to develop texture and complexity. The final blend is bottled for secondary fermentation and rests sur lie until it reaches the desired balance of depth and finesse, then finished with an Extra Brut dosage to maintain a very dry, terroir-focused profile.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Extra Brut Champagne is a versatile partner at the table, excelling with refined, delicately flavored dishes. Pair it with oysters, scallop crudo, sushi, and sashimi, or classic Champagne matches like caviar, blinis, and fine charcuterie. It also works beautifully alongside lightly grilled fish, lobster, creamy goat cheese, or roast chicken with herbs. Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F). A brief 10–15 minutes in a decanter or simply allowing the wine to open in the glass will help the aromatics unfold and reveal additional layers of complexity.

Producer
Jacques Rousseaux is a grower-producer based in the renowned Champagne region of France, working primarily with top-tier vineyards that hold Grand Cru status. Focused on expressing origin rather than formula, the estate emphasizes meticulous work in the vineyard, low yields, and careful, small-lot vinification to capture the character of each parcel. Known among Champagne enthusiasts for wines that balance intensity with elegance, the house has earned a quiet but respected following for its precise, terroir-driven bottlings such as Montgolfiere Extra Brut, which illustrates both the power of Pinot Noir and the finesse of Chardonnay in a classic Grand Cru expression.
