Description
J. B. Becker Wallufer Berg Bildstock Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1976 is a rare mature dessert wine from one of the Rheingau’s distinguished sites. Made from exceptionally concentrated, late-harvested Riesling grapes, this historic vintage combines deep sweetness with the vibrant acidity needed for remarkable longevity and balance.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, often developing richer amber highlights with age. Its mature bouquet is layered and expressive, revealing honey, dried apricot, ripe peach and citrus alongside the more complex notes that can emerge in an aged Trockenbeerenauslese, such as candied fruit and gentle caramelised nuances.
On the palate, it is richly sweet and concentrated, yet supported by refreshing Riesling acidity. Honeyed fruit, apricot, peach and citrus carry through to a long, lingering finish. A 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese is best enjoyed for its mature character; its condition and remaining aging potential will depend greatly on provenance and storage.
Production
The wine comes from the Wallufer Berg Bildstock vineyard in Walluf, within Germany’s Rheingau region. Trockenbeerenauslese is produced from individually selected, very ripe grapes—often affected by noble rot—which concentrate sugars, acidity and flavour. The 1976 vintage would have been made according to the traditional practices of the period, with gentle vinification designed to preserve the grapes’ intense natural sweetness and Riesling’s characteristic freshness.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C, allowing the wine a little time in the glass to reveal its mature aromas. It is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses, while its complexity also makes it rewarding to enjoy on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not essential for an aged sweet wine, but carefully standing the bottle upright before serving and pouring slowly can help separate any sediment.
Producer
J. B. Becker is a respected Rheingau estate based in Walluf, with a reputation for traditional, terroir-focused Riesling and for producing wines capable of extended bottle maturation. The estate’s wines reflect the character of the Rheingau’s hillside vineyards and the region’s long-standing association with high-quality Riesling, making this 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese a particularly distinctive example of historic Rheingau sweet wine.
