Description
J. B. Becker’s 2003 Eltviller Sonnenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare, intensely sweet wine from one of the Rheingau’s distinguished vineyard sites. Produced in the prized Trockenbeerenauslese style from individually selected, naturally concentrated grapes, it combines luscious fruit, vibrant acidity and remarkable longevity in an elegant 375 ml bottle.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a rich golden hue and an expressive nose of ripe peach, apricot and honey, with the concentrated character expected of a mature Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. On the palate, it is full-bodied and generously sweet, yet lifted by refreshing acidity that keeps the wine balanced and lively. The finish is long, polished and pleasantly persistent.
Thanks to its sweetness, acidity and concentrated fruit, this 2003 Riesling has excellent aging potential and can continue to develop beautifully when stored in a cool, dark place. It is also ready to enjoy now for those who appreciate mature, opulent dessert wines.
Production
The wine comes from the Eltviller Sonnenberg in Germany’s Rheingau, a region renowned for producing expressive Riesling with a strong balance of ripeness and acidity. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, it is made from highly concentrated, naturally shrivelled grapes selected at very advanced ripeness, often with the influence of noble rot. This traditional style results in a small quantity of richly sweet wine with exceptional intensity and cellaring potential.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, either as an aperitif or alongside desserts such as crème brûlée, tiramisu and cheesecake. Its sweetness and acidity also make it a compelling match for foie gras and richly flavoured, spicy or blue cheeses. Decanting is generally not necessary, although carefully pouring the wine into a small carafe can help separate any natural sediment in this mature bottle and allow its aromas to open.
Producer
J. B. Becker is a Rheingau producer associated with traditionally made, terroir-focused wines from the region’s celebrated vineyard sites. This bottling showcases the estate’s Eltviller Sonnenberg Riesling in one of Germany’s most prestigious sweet-wine categories. The half-bottle format makes it particularly well suited to special occasions, gifting or serving alongside dessert.
