Description

Hyacinth Pinotage 2024 is a bright, modern expression of South Africa’s signature grape, crafted entirely from 17–20-year-old vines rooted in the Limietberg’s cool-influenced terroir. This is Pinotage in a fresh, elegant guise: vivid fruit, fine structure and lifted spice rather than heaviness or over-ripeness. It showcases the new generation of Stellenbosch-area Pinotage, where precision winemaking and sensitive oak bring out nuance and purity. The wine’s unique selling point lies in its combination of cooler-climate finesse and old-vine depth, all at a highly approachable style and price. Limietberg’s microclimate, together with gentle handling in the cellar and maturation in small, older barrels, gives a Pinotage that is both characterful and supremely drinkable. Historically, Pinotage has been one of South Africa’s most debated grapes; Hyacinth Pinotage 2024 joins the movement that redefines it as refined, food-friendly and terroir-driven.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Hyacinth Pinotage 2024 shows a vibrant ruby hue with a translucent rim, hinting at its medium body and youthful energy. The nose is immediately expressive, with lively red fruit—think fresh cherries, raspberries and ripe blackberries—wrapped in gentle earthy undertones and a suggestion of dried Italian herbs. As it opens, subtle notes of spice and cocoa emerge, adding complexity without becoming heavy or sweet. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and beautifully poised, with silky, approachable tannins and a clean, refreshing line of acidity. Juicy red and dark berries lead the flavor profile, supported by those earthy, savoury nuances and a fine thread of spicy cocoa, so typical of Pinotage from cooler pockets of the Cape. The finish is smooth and persistent, with just enough structure to make it serious without losing its easy charm. Enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit and supple texture, or cellar it for 3–6 years to allow the spice and tertiary notes to knit together further.

Production
The grapes for Hyacinth Pinotage 2024 are sourced from Limietberg, a high-quality subzone influenced by cooler airflows and distinctive soils that contribute to natural freshness, moderate alcohol and aromatic precision. Vines aged 17–20 years produce smaller, more concentrated berries, translating the character of the site into the glass. The fruit is carefully hand-harvested to ensure only perfectly ripe bunches reach the cellar. After picking, the grapes undergo a two-day cold maceration to extract color and fine-grained tannin as gently as possible, preserving fragrance and purity. Fermentation is conducted with close temperature control, and once complete, the wine is matured for 10 months in small, seasoned oak barrels. Using older wood allows subtle oxidative complexity and a refined texture to develop without imposing strong oak flavors, ensuring the grape and terroir remain firmly at center stage.

Food & Serving
Hyacinth Pinotage 2024 is wonderfully versatile at the table. Its vibrant fruit and soft tannins make it an ideal partner for grilled lamb chops with rosemary, charcuterie and hard cheeses, roast chicken with Mediterranean herbs, mushroom-based dishes or even a gourmet burger. It also works beautifully with tomato-based pastas and pizzas, where the wine’s acidity and savoury notes complement the sauce. Serve at 16–18°C (slightly cooler than standard room temperature) to highlight freshness and aromatic lift. A light 20–30 minute decant will help the wine open up, especially in its youth, but it is expressive enough to enjoy straight from the bottle on a casual weeknight.

Producer
Hyacinth Wines was founded with a clear vision: to craft distinctive, high-quality Cape wines that remain accessible in both style and price.
