Description

Hermann Dönnhoff’s Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Eiswein Goldkapsel 2003 is a rare, richly concentrated sweet wine from one of the Nahe’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced only when naturally frozen grapes meet the demanding Eiswein requirements, this half-bottle combines remarkable sweetness, freshness and longevity in an especially collectible Goldkapsel bottling.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous golden colour, reflecting both its concentration and mature vintage. On the nose, ripe peach, apricot and honey are complemented by the refined, intensely fragrant character typical of Riesling Eiswein. The palate is luscious and full-bodied, with pure fruit sweetness balanced by vibrant acidity, leading to a long, harmonious finish. With its combination of concentration and freshness, this 2003 Eiswein has excellent ageing potential and can continue to develop gracefully when stored in ideal conditions. It is also ready to enjoy now, offering a particularly expressive and complex tasting experience.

Production
The grapes come from the Oberhäuser Brücke vineyard in the Nahe, a steep, sheltered site whose mineral soils and favourable exposure help Riesling retain its characteristic freshness. For Eiswein, healthy grapes are left on the vine until temperatures naturally fall to at least -7°C, allowing the water within the berries to freeze while sugars, acidity and aromas remain concentrated. The frozen grapes are harvested and pressed immediately, producing a small quantity of intensely sweet, naturally balanced wine. The Goldkapsel denotes this as a particularly distinguished selection.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its concentrated notes of peach, apricot and honey make it a beautiful partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue cheese; it can also be served in small pours as an elegant aperitif or concluding wine. Decanting is not essential, though carefully pouring the wine into a small carafe can help older bottles open up while leaving any sediment behind.

Producer
The Dönnhoff family has been making wine in the Nahe since the 18th century and has become one of Germany’s most respected Riesling producers. Under the Dönnhoff name, the estate is particularly renowned for precise, terroir-driven wines that balance concentration with clarity and acidity. Oberhäuser Brücke is among its signature sites, and this rare 2003 Eiswein illustrates the estate’s ability to produce exceptionally long-lived sweet wines.
