Description
Henriet-Bazin’s Arsène Grand Cru Extra Brut 2016 is a refined Champagne shaped by the celebrated Grand Cru villages of Verzy and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims. Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay using the traditional method, it combines fine, persistent bubbles with pronounced chalky freshness and a dry, elegant finish. The cuvée reflects a family commitment to the vineyards dating back to 1890.
Tasting Notes
Bright and finely effervescent in the glass, this Champagne offers a delicate, persistent mousse. Its aromatic profile is marked by mineral freshness, subtle citrus and ripe orchard-fruit nuances, with the extended lees ageing adding depth and finesse. On the palate, it is powerful yet well-balanced, with a rounded texture, lively acidity and a distinctly chalky, saline character. The Extra Brut dosage preserves its natural precision and makes it particularly appealing for lovers of dry, terroir-driven Champagne. Its structure and extended maturation give it the potential to develop further in bottle over the coming years.
Production
The grapes are sourced from northeast-facing Grand Cru parcels in Verzy and Verzenay, where silty clay and fine sand over pure chalk contribute energy, balance and mineral expression. The vineyards have been maintained with natural grass cover since 1890. Grapes are harvested by hand, while the first fermentation is followed by nine months on the lees in enamelled tanks. A second fermentation in bottle according to the traditional method is followed by approximately six years of lees ageing in the cellar, building complexity and a creamy texture before the wine is finished with a low Extra Brut dosage.
Food & Serving
Its mineral freshness and dry profile make it an excellent partner for delicate fish, shellfish, oysters and simply prepared seafood. It also works beautifully with refined soft or hard cheeses, particularly those with a subtle, savoury character. Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Decanting is not usually necessary for Champagne, although opening the bottle a few minutes before serving can allow its aromas to unfold; use a wide Champagne glass rather than a narrow flute for the best expression.
Producer
Henriet-Bazin is a family producer rooted in the Montagne de Reims, with a history of vineyard work stretching back to 1890. The estate’s Grand Cru parcels in Verzy and Verzenay provide the foundation for Champagnes that highlight the region’s chalk-rich soils and the structure of Pinot Noir, balanced by Chardonnay’s freshness. Arsène Grand Cru demonstrates the house’s focus on extended lees ageing, restrained dosage and expressive, terroir-led Champagne.
