Description
Gunderloch’s 1996 Nackenheimer Rothenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare and highly concentrated sweet wine from one of Rheinhessen’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Presented in a 0.375-litre bottle, this mature Riesling combines noble sweetness, vibrant acidity and remarkable aromatic complexity—a classic example of the exceptional ageing potential of German Trockenbeerenauslese.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting both its concentration and more than two decades of bottle age. Its expressive bouquet is layered with honey, dried apricot, ripe peach and citrus, complemented by the subtle richness associated with noble rot and long maturation.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely flavoured, balancing luscious fruit sweetness with refreshing Riesling acidity. Notes of apricot, peach, candied citrus and honey unfold through a long, persistent finish. Already mature and complex, it should continue to develop gracefully when stored under excellent cellar conditions.
Production
Sourced from the steep, south-facing Nackenheimer Rothenberg vineyard on the banks of the Rhine, this wine benefits from warm exposures and the site’s distinctive red slate soils. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, it is made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes affected by noble rot, concentrating sugars, fruit character and acidity. The 1996 vintage has allowed the wine to evolve into a richly textured and highly nuanced expression of Riesling.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C. Its sweetness and lively acidity make it an excellent partner for foie gras, blue cheese, fruit-based desserts and desserts featuring apricot or citrus; it can also complement mildly spiced Asian cuisine. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant or time in the glass can help reveal its full aromatic depth. The 375 ml format is ideal for a special occasion or for serving alongside several courses.
Producer
Founded in 1890, Gunderloch is one of the established names of Nackenheim and is particularly associated with the celebrated Rothenberg vineyard. The estate has built its reputation on finely structured Rieslings that combine mineral character, precision and longevity. This 1996 Trockenbeerenauslese showcases the producer’s ability to turn exceptional, botrytis-affected grapes into a luxurious wine with impressive depth and staying power.
