Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2009 is a distinguished Pauillac from the estate’s classified Fifth Growth château, renowned for producing wines with the structure and poise often associated with the appellation’s finest properties. From an outstanding Bordeaux vintage, it combines ripe Cabernet-driven fruit with the savoury complexity and long finish that make mature Pauillac so compelling.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby with garnet hues, the wine opens with aromas of cassis, blackberry and plum, followed by cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet composed, offering concentrated dark fruit, polished tannins and well-integrated oak, with refreshing acidity providing definition.
After more than a decade in bottle, the 2009 is entering a rewarding stage of maturity, with tertiary notes developing alongside its remaining fruit. It can be enjoyed now and should continue to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more when well stored.
Production
The vineyards lie on the deep gravel soils typical of Pauillac, which encourage excellent drainage and allow the vines to develop deeply rooted, concentrated fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the tannins to soften and the Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend to gain greater aromatic complexity and integration.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roasted or grilled red meats, rack of lamb, beef tenderloin and game, it also suits rich mushroom dishes, truffle preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving to open the aromas and separate any mature bottle sediment; older bottles should be handled gently and tasted after decanting.
Producer
Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of Pauillac’s historic estates and was included among the appellation’s Fifth Growths in the 1855 Classification. The property has been owned by the Borie family since 1978 and is recognised for its consistently elegant, long-lived wines, built around the classic gravel terroirs and Cabernet Sauvignon character of northern Médoc.
