Girolamo Russo’s Calderara Sottana 2017 is an Etna Rosso from a celebrated contrada near Randazzo, where volcanic slopes give the wines their distinctive character. With a 92-point Wine Enthusiast rating, this vintage brings together generous texture, fine tannins and a savoury, layered profile.

Tasting Notes
The nose brings together dried cherry, liquorice and tobacco with cedar, floral notes and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is full yet supple, with fine tannins and a nuanced balance of fruit and spice. Wine Enthusiast recommended drinking the 2017 between 2021 and 2027, making it a good choice to enjoy now.

Food & Serving
Try it with roast lamb, grilled mushrooms or a slow-cooked dish with herbs, all of which complement its savoury notes and fine tannins. Serve at around 16–18°C. A short decant can help the wine open up, particularly if it seems reserved on first pouring.

Girolamo Russo is a respected Etna producer based in the area around Passopisciaro. Founded by Giuseppe Russo and named for his father, the estate has helped bring wider attention to the distinct wines of Etna’s contrade.
