Description

A rare and highly mature German sweet wine from the exceptional 1959 vintage, this Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Gillot & Söhne is a remarkable piece of Rheinhessen wine history. Produced from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes, it offers the concentration and complexity expected from one of Germany’s most prestigious Prädikat categories. With its limited availability and venerable age, it is especially suited to collectors and memorable occasions.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden colour, reflecting both its considerable age and the concentration of the fruit. Its mature bouquet is intensely fragrant, showing layers of ripe peach, apricot and honey, with the possibility of further developed notes typical of a well-aged sweet Riesling. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly sweet, balanced by the refreshing acidity that gives Riesling its hallmark vitality. The finish is long, smooth and lingering. A 1959 Trockenbeerenauslese should be approached as a mature collector’s wine: its condition and remaining life will depend greatly on storage, fill level and provenance, but it is ready to be enjoyed now.

Production
Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually selected grapes that have become highly concentrated through late harvesting and, traditionally, noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). The grapes are typically picked by hand in several passes, allowing only the most shrivelled and concentrated berries to be used. From the Oppenheim area in Rheinhessen, the wine reflects the region’s long tradition of producing expressive Riesling wines, while its sweetness is balanced by the grape’s naturally vibrant acidity. Specific vineyard and cellar details for this historic bottling are not available.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas to develop in the glass. Its richness and acidity make it a classic partner for foie gras, blue cheeses, fruit-based desserts and elegant pastries; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but careful decanting may be beneficial if sediment is present. Open gently and handle the bottle with care given its age.

Producer
Gillot & Söhne is associated with the Oppenheim wine tradition in Rheinhessen, one of Germany’s historic regions for Riesling production. This 1959 bottling offers a rare glimpse into the style and quality of mature German Prädikatswein from the post-war era. While detailed historical information about the producer and this specific cuvée is limited, the age, classification and provenance make it a distinctive addition to a serious German wine collection.
