Description

A remarkable piece of German wine history, this 1953 Oppenheimer Goldberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Gillot & Söhne represents one of the highest and rarest quality categories in German viticulture. Made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes, it is a mature collector’s wine from the celebrated Oppenheimer Goldberg vineyard in Rheinhessen, offering an extraordinary combination of sweetness, concentration and age-developed complexity.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour with inviting amber reflections. Its mature bouquet is intense and layered, revealing dried fruits, honey, caramel and warming spice, with the kind of evolved character expected from a well-preserved wine of this age. On the palate, it is rich, full-bodied and opulent, yet balanced by refreshing acidity. Hints of mineral character emerge through the sweetness, leading to a remarkably long and persistent finish. A 1953 Trockenbeerenauslese is a very mature wine and should be approached as a historic drinking experience. Its condition, ullage and storage history will be decisive, but a well-preserved bottle may offer exceptional tertiary complexity. This is also a valuable addition to a serious German wine collection.

Production
The wine originates from the steep slopes of Oppenheimer Goldberg in Rheinhessen, a site known for producing expressive, mineral-inflected wines. Trockenbeerenauslese is made only from highly concentrated grapes affected by noble rot and selected individually at harvest. The grapes are pressed gently to extract their concentrated juice before fermentation, with the wine’s natural sweetness and acidity preserved through the careful cellar work traditionally associated with this rare Prädikatswein category.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing its mature aromas and intricate sweetness to unfold. It is a natural partner for pâté, foie gras, blue cheese and refined fruit-based desserts, particularly those featuring apricot, apple or citrus. It can also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant may help separate any sediment; given its age, the bottle should be handled carefully and opened shortly before serving.

Producer
Gillot & Söhne is presented here through a historic Rheinhessen bottling from the renowned Oppenheimer Goldberg vineyard. The 1953 vintage is described as one of the outstanding German vintages of the 20th century, making this bottle particularly significant for collectors of mature Riesling and historic Prädikatsweine. As with all wines of this age, provenance, fill level and storage conditions are important considerations when assessing the bottle.
