Description
Giacomo Conterno’s Monfortino Barolo Riserva 1945 is a remarkably rare bottle from one of Piedmont’s most revered estates. Made from Nebbiolo and matured for the long term, this historic Barolo reflects the traditional, age-worthy style that has made Monfortino a benchmark for fine Italian wine. As with any wine of this age, provenance and storage conditions are essential to its present character and value.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is expected to show a mature garnet or brick-red hue, often with considerable variation at the rim. Its bouquet is complex and evolved, offering layers of dried red fruit, leather, tobacco, autumn leaves and warming spices, with the tertiary aromas that develop only after many decades in bottle.
The palate is full-bodied yet finely structured, balancing mature fruit with savoury notes, resolved tannins and refreshing acidity. A long, nuanced finish may reveal further impressions of dried herbs, spice and tobacco. At more than seven decades old, this is a fully mature wine best appreciated now; its condition will depend greatly on fill level, cork integrity, provenance and cellar history.
Production
Monfortino is produced in the traditional Barolo manner from Nebbiolo grown in the Langhe hills of Piedmont. The wine is associated with extended maturation and a deliberately hands-off approach designed to preserve structure, complexity and longevity, although detailed production records for a bottle from 1945 may be limited. The vineyard and cellar practices of the period were markedly traditional, and the wine’s current expression will be shaped as much by its long bottle ageing as by its original vinification.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, around 16–18°C, in a large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glass. Carefully stand the bottle upright before opening, allowing any sediment to settle, then decant gently only if necessary; for a wine of this age, prolonged aeration may cause delicate aromas to fade. It would pair beautifully with classic Piedmontese dishes such as brasato al Barolo, truffle-infused pasta, slow-cooked game, mature hard cheeses or refined preparations of veal and mushrooms.
Producer
Founded by Giacomo Conterno in the early twentieth century, the estate has become one of the defining names in traditional Barolo. Based in Monforte d’Alba, Giacomo Conterno is celebrated for powerful, age-worthy wines made with extended maturation and exceptional patience. Monfortino Barolo Riserva is the estate’s flagship cuvée and is regarded internationally as one of Italy’s great collectible wines, with the 1945 vintage representing a particularly scarce and historically significant release.
