Gaja Barolo Sperss 2021

Gaja Barolo Sperss 2021 is a profound expression of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d’Alba, combining the elegance and precision associated with Gaja with the firm, mineral character of one of Barolo’s most renowned communes. First produced in 1989, Sperss marked Gaja’s return to the Langhe after decades focused primarily on Barbaresco and has since become one of Piedmont’s benchmark wines.

Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage opens with a deep, luminous ruby colour and an inviting bouquet of dark berries, dried flowers and earthy spice. A distinctive iron-rich note—evoking rusty nails, wet stone and soft earth—adds complexity to the concentrated fruit, while subtle hints of herbs and savoury spice emerge with air. On the palate, the wine is exceptionally balanced, pure and detailed, with a dense core of dark fruit supported by taut tannins and bright acidity. Its finish is markedly salty, stony and mineral, giving the wine a more austere, structured edge than Gaja’s Conteisa. This is a powerful yet refined Barolo with considerable cellaring potential; it will develop greater aromatic complexity over the next 15–25 years, and likely beyond in a suitable cellar.

Production
The fruit for Sperss comes from vineyards in Serralunga d’Alba, a commune known for producing Barolos with pronounced structure, depth and mineral intensity. The combination of Nebbiolo and the area’s calcareous, iron-rich soils helps explain the wine’s savoury character and firm backbone. Following careful selection of the grapes, the wine is traditionally vinified and matured in oak, allowing the ripe fruit, vigorous tannins and distinctive terroir to integrate without losing their precision.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately indivisible 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended when enjoying the wine in its youth, both to soften its structure and to reveal its layered aromas. Its depth and savoury character make it an excellent partner for braised beef, wild boar, roasted game, truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms and aged hard cheeses.
