Description
The 1979 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel is a rare half-bottle from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced from a distinguished vintage and finished with the estate’s prestigious Goldkapsel designation, it offers the depth, sweetness and finely preserved acidity that make mature Mosel Riesling so compelling.
Tasting Notes
Deep golden in colour, this mature Riesling displays an expressive bouquet of ripe stone fruit, honey and delicate spice, with the complex, evolved character expected from a wine of its age. On the palate, gentle sweetness is balanced by refreshing acidity, giving the wine both richness and poise. The finish is long, lingering and harmonious. Now fully mature, it should be enjoyed for its developed character; with excellent storage provenance, it may continue to evolve gracefully, although older bottles are best opened without unnecessary delay.
Production
The wine comes from Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr, a prestigious Mosel vineyard known for producing elegant Rieslings with pronounced aromatic intensity and natural freshness. As an Auslese, it was made from carefully selected, fully ripe grapes, with the Goldkapsel indicating an especially distinguished selection within the estate’s range. Specific harvesting and vinification details for this historic 1979 bottling are not available, but the wine’s balance reflects the classic Mosel approach of preserving Riesling’s vibrant acidity alongside its natural sweetness.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing its mature aromas to unfold in the glass. Its balance of sweetness and acidity makes it a refined partner for foie gras, pâté, spicy Asian cuisine, rich terrines and blue cheese; it can also be enjoyed with fruit-based desserts that are not overly sweet. Decanting is not usually necessary for a mature Riesling, though carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and serving it gently can help separate any sediment.
Producer
Fritz Haag is a historic family estate based in Brauneberg in Germany’s Mosel region, with a long-standing reputation for producing precise, elegant Rieslings from renowned local vineyards. The estate is particularly associated with the Brauneberger Juffer and Juffer-Sonnenuhr sites, whose steep slate-rich slopes are capable of producing wines with both finesse and remarkable longevity. This 1979 bottling offers a distinctive glimpse into the character of the estate and Mosel Riesling from an earlier generation.
