Description
Frescobaldi Tenuta Ammiraglia Santa Maria is a vibrant Morellino di Scansano DOCG from Tuscany’s sun-drenched Maremma. A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines traditional Tuscan character with a fresh, contemporary style, offering expressive fruit, refined tannins and a clear sense of place. The Santa Maria cuvée was created in 2000 as a modern expression of this historic appellation.
Tasting Notes
The wine has an intense, brilliant ruby-red colour. Its aromatic profile is led by cherries, including hints of liqueur-soaked cherry, and ripe plum, with subtle spicy notes of pepper adding complexity.
On the palate, it is dry, warm and well balanced, with lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. The finish is persistent and gently ethereal, leaving an impression of ripe fruit and spice. With its fresh structure and moderate maturation, the 2024 vintage is approachable now and should drink well over the next few years when properly stored.
Production
The grapes are sourced from vineyards in the Morellino di Scansano area of Grosseto, where Mediterranean conditions, favourable sun exposure and elevations of approximately 150–500 metres promote even ripening while preserving aromatic freshness. Carefully selected Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are vinified in stainless-steel tanks to protect their fruit character and vibrancy. The wine then remains in tank for around ten months, without oak ageing, followed by a final resting period that allows the aromas, tannins and acidity to integrate harmoniously.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, ideally at 16–18°C. Santa Maria pairs naturally with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as wild boar ragù, grilled sausages, roast pork and herb-seasoned lamb, while its freshness also complements tomato-based pasta, pizza and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential for this youthful, fruit-driven red, although a brief 20–30 minute aeration can help open its aromas.
