Description

Ferragu Amarone della Valpolicella 2018 is a powerful yet remarkably elegant red from one of Veneto’s most characterful corners. Crafted in tiny quantities by Ferragù Carlo, this Amarone showcases the depth and intensity that have made Valpolicella’s appassimento wines famous worldwide. Its complex structure, velvety richness and beautifully judged balance make it a standout choice for those seeking a truly expressive, premium Italian red.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Ferragu Amarone reveals an impenetrable, deep garnet-red core with a dark ruby rim. The nose is layered and intense, offering ripe black cherry, dried plum and fig alongside notes of dark chocolate, espresso, sweet tobacco and warm spices, with hints of balsamic, dried herbs and a touch of vanilla from oak aging. On the palate, this Amarone is full-bodied and concentrated, yet finely balanced by fresh acidity and polished tannins. Flavours of macerated cherry, dried blackberry and blackcurrant mingle with licorice, cocoa, roasted coffee bean and a subtle savoury edge. The finish is long, warm and persistent, with a lingering impression of dried fruit and spice. Built to age, it will continue to develop greater complexity and tertiary notes (leather, truffle, underbrush) over the next 10–15 years, and will easily hold beyond that in optimal cellar conditions.

Production
Ferragù’s Amarone della Valpolicella is born from hillside vineyards in Veneto, where poor, rocky soils and significant day–night temperature swings help concentrate aromas and flavours in the grapes. The classic Valpolicella blend of Corvina, Corvinone, Croatina, Oseleta and Rondinella is hand-harvested, with rigorous selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches. In true Amarone style, the grapes are then laid out to partially dry (appassimento), concentrating sugars, acids and phenolics before a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation. After maceration to extract colour and structure, the wine is aged in oak barrels to harmonise its richness, build complexity and refine the tannins before bottling and further bottle aging.

Food & Serving
This is a contemplative wine that shines with rich, flavourful dishes: think braised beef or oxtail, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game stews, aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, mature Pecorino) and truffle-infused dishes. It also pairs beautifully with dark chocolate desserts or can be enjoyed on its own as a meditative after-dinner wine. Serve at 18–20 °C (64–68 °F). Decant for at least 1–2 hours before serving to allow the aromatics to fully open and the texture to soften into its most luxurious form.

Producer
Ferragù Carlo is a small, quality-driven producer in Valpolicella, dedicated to expressing the character of Amarone through meticulous vineyard work and artisanal winemaking. Working within one of Italy’s most renowned red wine regions, the estate focuses on low yields, careful grape selection and traditional appassimento techniques to craft wines of depth and individuality. While not as large or widely known as some historic houses, Ferragù has earned a loyal following among enthusiasts and sommeliers for its rich, concentrated yet impeccably balanced Amarone wines that speak clearly of their Veneto origins.
