Description
The 2009 Emrich-Schönleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare, intensely sweet dessert wine from one of the Nahe’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made in the Trockenbeerenauslese style from individually selected, exceptionally ripe Riesling grapes, it combines remarkable concentration with the freshness and precision for which the Halenberg is known. Its half-bottle format makes it especially well suited to intimate after-dinner occasions or cellaring.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant golden in colour, this late-harvest Riesling offers an expressive bouquet of ripe peach, apricot and honey, with the luscious, concentrated character associated with noble sweetness. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, yet lifted by vibrant acidity that keeps the sweetness balanced and the finish refreshing rather than heavy.
The wine’s combination of sweetness, acidity and concentration gives it excellent ageing potential. Properly stored, a Trockenbeerenauslese of this quality can develop further layers of dried fruit, honey, spice and mineral complexity over many years.
Production
The grapes come from the steep Monzinger Halenberg, a highly regarded Nahe vineyard site whose challenging slopes and mineral-rich soils contribute to the wine’s intensity and finesse. For this Trockenbeerenauslese, the grapes were harvested late and selected by hand with exceptional care, using only the most concentrated, fully mature berries. The resulting wine reflects the meticulous selection and slow development typical of this prestigious Prädikat style.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. This wine is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apricot tart and other delicate pastries, while its acidity also makes it an excellent partner for blue cheese and mature washed-rind cheeses. It is equally rewarding on its own as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is not essential, although briefly opening the bottle before serving can allow its aromas to unfold; older bottles should be handled gently and may benefit from careful separation from any sediment.
Producer
Emrich-Schönleber is one of the Nahe’s most respected family wineries, based in Monzingen and closely associated with the exceptional vineyards surrounding the village. The estate is particularly admired for its precise, elegant Rieslings, which balance site expression with clarity and finesse. Its wines from the Monzinger Halenberg are regarded as benchmark examples of the Nahe’s potential, and this 2009 Trockenbeerenauslese showcases the estate’s ability to produce exceptionally concentrated sweet wines without sacrificing freshness.
