Description

Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese Versteigerung 1979 is a rare, fully mature Riesling from one of the Saar’s most celebrated vineyards. Produced from carefully selected grapes and offered through the region’s prestigious auction tradition, it combines decades of bottle age with the elegance, sweetness and vibrant acidity for which Scharzhofberger wines are renowned.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden colour, reflecting its long maturation in bottle. Its aromatic profile is rich and layered, with ripe peach, apricot and pineapple complemented by notes of honey, spice and developed sweetness. On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex, with a poised balance between luscious fruit, residual sweetness and refreshing acidity. A subtle mineral character carries through to the long, elegant finish. At this stage, the wine should be approached as a mature Riesling with considerable tertiary complexity. Its condition and remaining potential will depend on storage, but a well-preserved bottle is best enjoyed now or in the near term rather than held solely for further development.

Production
The wine comes from the steep, mineral-rich Scharzhofberger vineyard in the Saar, part of the historic Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine region. The Auslese designation indicates a wine made from individually selected, fully ripe grapes, while “Versteigerung” refers to the traditional auction classification reserved for particularly distinguished lots. Specific harvesting and vinification details for this bottle are not provided, but the wine’s character reflects the combination of noble Riesling fruit, Saar terroir and extended bottle maturation.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pastries and blue or washed-rind cheeses; it can also complement rich foie gras or gently spiced cuisine. Decanting is not essential, but careful decanting may be worthwhile if sediment is present. For this mature wine, a gentle transfer immediately before serving is preferable to prolonged aeration.

Producer
Egon Müller Scharzhof is one of Germany’s most esteemed Riesling producers, with a long-standing reputation centred on the Scharzhof estate and the exceptional vineyards of the Saar. The Scharzhofberger vineyard is regarded as one of the region’s most important sites, celebrated for producing Rieslings with concentration, minerality, sweetness and remarkable longevity. Bottles from the estate’s auction wines are particularly sought after by collectors for their rarity and age-worthiness.
