Description

Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 1976 is a rare and distinguished example of mature Mosel Riesling from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Produced from selected grapes in the renowned Scharzhofberger vineyard, this historic wine has developed remarkable depth and complexity through decades of bottle ageing. The listed AP number, 20, further identifies this as a specific bottling from the estate’s highly sought-after 1976 vintage.

Tasting Notes
The wine is expected to show a deep golden hue, with the evolution typical of a mature Riesling Auslese. Its bouquet combines ripe peach, apricot and citrus fruit with honeyed nuances and a subtle, finely stony mineral character. On the palate, sweetness and acidity remain beautifully balanced, giving the wine both richness and freshness. Mature stone-fruit flavours lead into a long, elegant finish marked by honey, citrus and mineral notes. Properly stored, a wine of this pedigree can remain compelling for many years, although its condition and remaining ageing potential will depend on its storage history.

Production
Scharzhofberger is a steep, highly regarded vineyard in the Saar, traditionally associated with Rieslings of exceptional finesse, acidity and longevity. The site’s slate-rich soils contribute a distinctive mineral character, while its sheltered conditions support the development of concentrated, naturally sweet grapes. As an Auslese, the wine is made from carefully selected, fully ripe grapes harvested at elevated ripeness; the precise harvesting and vinification details for this historic vintage are not specified.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. It is an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or washed-rind cheeses, while its balance also makes it a memorable aperitif. Decanting is not essential, but a gentle decant can help separate any mature sediment and may encourage the wine to reveal its full aromatic complexity; alternatively, serve directly from the bottle and pour carefully toward the end.

Producer
Egon Müller Scharzhof is one of Germany’s most respected Riesling producers, with the historic Scharzhof estate situated in the Saar, a renowned subregion of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. The Müller family has long been associated with the exceptional Scharzhofberger vineyard, whose wines are prized worldwide for their elegance, precision and extraordinary ageing potential. The estate’s rare sweet Rieslings are regarded as benchmarks for the region and are particularly sought after by collectors.
