Description

Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 1969 is a rare mature German sweet wine from one of the Saar’s most celebrated vineyards. Produced from carefully selected Riesling grapes at the Scharzhof estate, this historic vintage offers remarkable depth, balance and longevity, making it a compelling choice for collectors and lovers of mature Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep golden colour, reflecting its considerable age and long development in bottle. Its mature bouquet brings together ripe and dried fruit, honey, subtle spice and evolved tertiary nuances. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with concentrated fruit, a refreshing thread of acidity and a long, lingering finish. The balance between sweetness and acidity has allowed this Auslese to age gracefully, and it should be approached as a mature wine to be enjoyed now rather than cellared indefinitely.

Production
The wine comes from the steep Scharzhofberg vineyard in the Saar, where cool conditions, slate soils and a long ripening season help Riesling develop both concentration and freshness. Auslese is made from individually selected, fully ripe grapes, often with a degree of natural botrytis depending on the vintage. The 1969 wine was crafted in the traditional style of the estate, preserving the grape’s aromatic character while allowing its natural sweetness and acidity to provide structure for extended ageing.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing the wine to open gradually in the glass. It pairs beautifully with delicate fish dishes, poultry, pâté, mildly spicy cuisine and mature or blue cheeses. For an older bottle, decant only if necessary to remove sediment, and do so gently shortly before serving; otherwise, careful pouring from the bottle will help preserve its delicate mature aromas.

Producer
Egon Müller’s Scharzhof estate is one of the most distinguished names in the Saar and among Germany’s leading producers of Riesling. With roots reaching back centuries, the estate is particularly associated with the steep, slate-rich Scharzhofberg vineyard, whose wines are prized for their purity, elegance and exceptional ageing potential. Its sweet Rieslings have achieved international recognition and are regarded as benchmarks for the Saar’s finest wines.
