Description

Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Forster Ungeheuer Riesling Auslese 1953 is a rare piece of Pfalz wine history, sourced from the prestigious Forster Ungeheuer vineyard and matured in bottle for more than seven decades. A remarkable example of mature German Riesling, it combines the richness of Auslese sweetness with the freshness and mineral character that have long defined the finest wines of the region.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and development in bottle. Its expressive bouquet reveals layers of ripe peach, apricot, honey and candied citrus, complemented by subtle mature-wine nuances and a delicate mineral note. On the palate, it is full-bodied and remarkably complex, with luscious fruit and sweetness balanced by lively acidity. The finish is long and persistent, leaving impressions of honeyed stone fruit, citrus peel and mineral freshness. As a 1953 bottling, it should be considered fully mature; its condition and further longevity will depend greatly on storage history, fill level and cork integrity.

Production
The wine comes from Forster Ungeheuer, one of the Pfalz’s renowned vineyard sites, known for its warm, sheltered conditions and mineral-rich soils. Made in the Auslese style from carefully selected, fully ripe Riesling grapes, the wine was crafted to express both concentration and freshness before spending decades developing in bottle. Specific details regarding the original harvest and vinification are not available, as is common with historic bottlings of this age.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its balance of sweetness, acidity and mature fruit makes it a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or washed-rind cheeses; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif. Decanting is not always necessary, but a gentle decant may help separate any sediment and allow the wine to open. Handle the bottle carefully and inspect the cork before serving.

Producer
Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is one of the historic estates of the Mittelhaardt in the Pfalz, with roots reaching back to the early eighteenth century. Based in Deidesheim, the estate has played an important role in establishing the international reputation of premium Pfalz Riesling and is particularly associated with distinguished vineyards around Forst and Deidesheim. Its historic bottlings, including wines from Forster Ungeheuer, are prized by collectors for their longevity, provenance and expression of site.
