Description
The 1989 Forster Jesuitengarten Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is an exceptionally rare Pfalz sweet wine, harvested at an extraordinary 243° Oechsle. Made from one of Forst’s most renowned vineyard sites, this mature Riesling combines remarkable concentration with the freshness and balance needed for long ageing. A compelling example of Germany’s great noble-sweet wine tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep golden colour, reflecting both its high concentration and considerable bottle age. The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of honey, ripe peach, apricot and marzipan, with an opulent yet refined character.
The palate is richly sweet and full-bodied, supported by refreshing acidity that keeps the wine poised rather than heavy. Concentrated fruit and honeyed flavours lead into a remarkably long, persistent finish. With its structure, sweetness and acidity, this 1989 vintage has excellent ageing potential and can continue to develop in a well-stored bottle.
Production
Sourced from the celebrated Forster Jesuitengarten vineyard in the Pfalz, the wine reflects a prestigious site known for producing highly expressive Riesling. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, it represents the highest level of concentration in Germany’s traditional Prädikatswein classification, made from individually selected, naturally shrivelled grapes. The exceptional must weight of 243° Oechsle points to an extraordinarily rich harvest, while the wine’s balance relies on the interplay between intense sweetness and Riesling’s natural acidity. Specific harvesting and cellar details are not provided.
Food & Serving
This concentrated Riesling is excellent with foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton, and rich fruit-based desserts including apricot tart, peach desserts or crème brûlée. It can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative after-dinner wine. Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Decanting is generally not necessary, although carefully standing the bottle upright and pouring slowly can help separate any mature sediment.
Producer
Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is one of the historic names of the Pfalz and is closely associated with the prestigious vineyards around Deidesheim and Forst. The estate has long been recognised for its focus on expressive Riesling and the distinctive character of its vineyard sites. This Forster Jesuitengarten Trockenbeerenauslese illustrates the producer’s ability to create rare, age-worthy wines of exceptional concentration, elegance and regional identity.
