Description

A remarkable historic Riesling from the celebrated Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan estate, this 1943 Deidesheimer Grainhübel Trockenbeerenauslese represents one of Germany’s highest Prädikat categories. Produced from individually selected, exceptionally ripe grapes in the renowned Deidesheim area of the Pfalz, it is a rare collector’s wine with outstanding historical character.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep golden hue, with the colour and intensity expected from more than eight decades of bottle age. Its mature bouquet combines concentrated ripe fruit with notes of honey, warm spice and delicate mineral nuances. Rich and sweet on the palate, it is supported by the vibrant acidity characteristic of Riesling, creating balance and freshness despite its luscious texture. The finish is long and intense, with lingering honeyed fruit, spice and a subtle mineral edge. As a 1943 bottling, its condition and evolution will naturally depend on storage history, but it is best approached as a mature collector’s wine to enjoy now rather than cellar indefinitely.

Production
The grapes came from the Deidesheimer Grainhübel vineyard in the Pfalz and were harvested by hand, with careful selection to retain only the finest and most fully ripened fruit. As a Trockenbeerenauslese, the wine belongs to the highest traditional German quality category, made from individually selected, naturally concentrated grapes. The exact vinification and maturation details of this historic 1943 bottling are not available.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, allowing the wine’s mature aromas and sweetness to unfold in the glass. It is an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée and pâtisserie, while its acidity also makes it especially appealing with blue cheese or mature hard cheeses. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif or contemplative after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently can help separate any sediment; a short period of aeration in the glass is preferable to prolonged decanting.

Producer
Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is one of the historic names of the Pfalz and has long been associated with the great vineyards around Deidesheim. The estate’s reputation was built on producing distinguished Rieslings that express the character of the region’s prestigious sites. This 1943 bottling offers a rare glimpse into that heritage and is particularly suited to collectors of mature German wine and historically significant vintages.
