Description

The Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese 1976 is a rare and beautifully mature sweet wine from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards. Made from hand-selected Riesling berries affected by noble rot, this exceptional Beerenauslese combines concentrated fruit, vibrant acidity and remarkable longevity. The highly regarded 1976 vintage makes it a particularly compelling bottle for collectors and lovers of historic German Riesling.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this mature Riesling presents a luminous golden hue, potentially deepening towards amber with age. Its aromatic profile is richly layered, offering ripe peach and apricot alongside honey, candied citrus and the distinctive slate-like minerality associated with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. With further aeration, mature notes of dried fruit, spice and caramel may emerge. The palate is concentrated and luscious, yet kept remarkably fresh by Riesling’s naturally high acidity. Generous flavours of stone fruit, citrus preserve and honey unfold with a subtle mineral edge, leading to a long, persistent finish marked by spice and refreshing citrus notes. At this stage, the wine is fully mature and best enjoyed for its complexity, though well-stored examples may continue to evolve in bottle.

Production
The grapes came from the steep, sun-exposed slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a renowned Mosel site known for its blue slate soils, excellent light exposure and capacity to produce exceptionally long-lived Rieslings. Beerenauslese is produced from individually selected, overripe berries, often concentrated by noble rot, and represents one of Germany’s highest traditional quality categories. The fruit was harvested by hand and made into a richly sweet wine, with fermentation naturally moderated by the high sugar concentration while preserving the Riesling’s essential acidity.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. This Beerenauslese is an elegant partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, apple or peach tart, and blue or washed-rind cheeses; it can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative finale to a special meal. Decanting is not usually necessary, but a careful pour into a small decanter may help separate any natural sediment and allow the wine’s mature aromas to open. Given its age, handle and open the bottle gently.

Producer
Dr. Loosen is one of Germany’s best-known Mosel estates, with a long-standing history in the region and an international reputation for expressive, age-worthy Rieslings. The winery is particularly associated with prestigious vineyards along the Mosel, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, where steep slate slopes and a cool climate create wines of both concentration and precision. Its commitment to traditional German Riesling and historic vineyard sites has made Dr. Loosen an important ambassador for the Mosel on the world stage.
