Domaine du Pegau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée is one of the benchmark wines of the Southern Rhône, prized for its depth, authenticity, and remarkable ageing capacity. In magnum format, the 2020 vintage offers even greater potential for complexity and long-term evolution, with the kind of classic richness that has earned this cuvée a loyal following worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark core with plenty of ripe concentration. The nose opens with blackberry, dark plum, black tea, black pepper, and a lifted herbal edge of rosemary and thyme, gradually unfolding into notes of leather and sandalwood with air.
The palate is powerful yet finely balanced, delivering layers of dark fruit, clove, white pepper, and Mediterranean herbs wrapped in a structured, generous frame. While already impressive, this is a wine built for the cellar and should continue to improve over the next 5 years, remaining at a top level for 20–25 years or more.
Production
Cuvée Réservée is a traditional blend of 13 grape varieties, with Grenache as the clear dominant component at around 80%. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented in cement vats with native yeasts, preserving purity and character, before the wine is aged for two years in older oak barrels. The result is a wine that reflects the sun-baked terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with impressive depth, balance, and a distinctly old-school sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for grilled lamb, slow-roasted game, beef short ribs, venison, and richly flavored Provençal dishes with herbs and garlic. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if opening young to allow the aromatics and structure to fully раскрыться.
Producer
Domaine du Pegau is one of the most respected producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for its traditional approach and wines of unmistakable personality. Under Laurence Féraud, the estate has built a formidable reputation for producing soulful, long-lived Rhône wines, with Cuvée Réservée standing as its signature bottling and one of the appellation’s most celebrated references.
