Domaine du Pégau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservée 2023 is a classic benchmark from one of the appellation’s most respected estates. Built from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, it delivers the kind of depth, perfume and old-world character that has made Pégau one of the most sought-after names in the Southern Rhône.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows the generous, sun-kissed style of the vintage, with ripe red and black fruits framed by notes of garrigue, saddle leather and warm spice. It is medium to full-bodied, rounded and supple, with a seductive texture and a more mature, expressive personality that suggests impressive richness without losing balance.
On the palate, the fruit is exotic and expansive, but there is also enough freshness to keep the wine lively and focused. With its concentration and structure, this cuvée should age beautifully, gaining even more complexity over the next decade or more.
Production
Sourced from Domaine du Pégau’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards in the Southern Rhône, where galets roulés, clay and limestone soils help shape the wine’s power and aromatic complexity. The blend is dominated by Grenache Noir, supported by Mourvèdre and Syrah, and the wine is traditionally handled to preserve texture, depth and regional character, with élevage in large foudres helping maintain balance and nuance.
Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roast lamb, duck, game, beef daube, or Provençal dishes with herbs, olives and garlic. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Domaine du Pégau is a reference-point producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, founded by the Brunel family and long admired for its traditional approach and age-worthy wines. The estate is especially known for producing powerful yet characterful Southern Rhône reds that capture both the generosity of the region and its savory, garrigue-driven complexity.
