Domaine des Roches Neuves La Marginale Saumur Champigny Bio 2020

Domaine des Roches Neuves La Marginale is a distinguished Saumur-Champigny made from Loire Valley Cabernet Franc by biodynamic vigneron Thierry Germain. Drawn from two exceptional limestone sites, Fossés de Chaintré and some of the oldest vines in Les Poyeux, it is a powerful yet finely detailed expression of one of the Loire’s most celebrated red-wine appellations.

Tasting Notes
The 2020 vintage shows a deep ruby colour with youthful violet reflections. Its expressive bouquet opens with dark plum and ripe black fruit, followed by peppery spice, sage and a refreshing hint of mint. With time in the glass, the fruit becomes brighter and more open, while the savoury spice gains balance and harmony. On the palate, La Marginale combines concentration with the freshness and precise, mineral character associated with limestone-grown Cabernet Franc. Fine-grained tannins provide structure, while dark fruit, herbs and subtle spice carry through to a long, persistent finish. This is a serious, age-worthy Saumur-Champigny that can be enjoyed now after decanting, but should develop further in bottle over the next decade or more.

Production
The cuvée brings together grapes from Fossés de Chaintré and some of the oldest parcels in Les Poyeux, both marked by calcareous limestone soils. Thierry Germain farms biodynamically, with a focus on healthy soils, low-intervention viticulture and transparent expression of place. The wine is matured for a year in a 2,500-litre Stockinger cask built in the Domaine des Roches Neuves cellar, before being transferred to a three-year-old Burgundy barrique for further refinement.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after 30–60 minutes in a decanter to allow its fruit, herbs and mineral nuances to unfold. Its structure and freshness make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, duck, venison and beef, while its savoury character also suits mushroom dishes, lentils, grilled vegetables and mature cheeses.
