Description

Domaine de la Mordorée Reine des Bois Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 MG is a Grenache-led Rhône red in magnum with dark fruit, pepper, violet and patient cellaring. It has the depth and grip you want from Reine des Bois. The magnum format makes it a serious table bottle for a long roast or a cellar slot.

About the Wine
The 2020 Reine des Bois comes from Domaine de la Mordorée in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the southern Rhône. The vineyards for this wine sit on galets roulés, sandy soil and clay-limestone. Grenache leads the blend, with Mourvèdre, Syrah and the rarer Vaccarèse in support. That Vaccarèse detail matters here. It brings a floral and peppery accent that threads through the black fruit. Certified organic and biodynamic farming gives this magnum a clear link to the estate’s most careful vineyard work. After fermentation, the wine is aged in large French oak foudres and demi-muids. That larger oak format keeps the focus on blackberry, raspberry and dark spice rather than obvious sweetness from wood. The 2020 vintage has real density, and the dry 15% frame feels broad across the palate. Reine des Bois carries more leather and violet than many Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends from this address. A faint note of new saddle leather lingers after the raspberry fruit.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Domaine de la Mordorée Reine des Bois Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 MG is deep ruby with a purple edge that suits its magnum scale. Blackberry and black raspberry arrive first, then cracked black pepper, violet and new saddle leather move through the middle. The palate is dry and medium to full-bodied, with dense fruit and tannins that build slowly across the gums. The finish stays long, dark and peppered, and the violet note returns after air in the glass. Drinking window: 2023-2040.

Food Pairing
Open this magnum for a table that can handle a generous Rhône red, especially côte de boeuf with rosemary potatoes or ribeye with a pepper crust. Mourvèdre and Syrah in the blend make game feel natural here, so try venison loin with juniper or slow-cooked wild boar ragu. For a regional route, serve it with daube provençale, black olives and a spoonful of the braising juices. Hard aged cheese also has the right grip, especially aged Comté or a firm Tomme de Savoie, and the 1500 ml format suits a long roast lunch. Give it air in a broad decanter before lamb shoulder, as the violet and leather notes become clearer with time.

Producer
Domaine de la Mordorée is one of those estates you can spot before the cork is pulled, with the woodcock on the label forming part of its name and visual language. It is a small mark on a powerful bottle, and it makes the domaine instantly recognisable on a Rhône shelf. La Mordorée refers to the bird known as the woodcock, and that forest image runs straight into the name La Reine des Bois for this top Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvée. Christophe Delorme founded the domaine in the 1980s and built its reputation across Tavel, Lirac and Châteauneuf-du-Pape through severe selection and a taste for full-flavoured southern Rhône fruit. After his death, Madeleine and Ambre Delorme continued the family work, with certified organic and biodynamic farming now central to the estate’s identity. For this 2020 magnum the useful producer detail is the discipline behind the richness: ripe Grenache sits with Mourvèdre and Syrah plus Vaccarèse, then large French oak gives shape and quiet spice.
