Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 MG is a Grenache-led red from the Rhone with ripe plum, pepper and lavender depth in magnum format. This is a large-scale Châteauneuf with real cellar intent. The two-year Grenache élevage gives it breadth. Mourvèdre adds cured meat, clove and a small vanilla shadow.
About the Wine
Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 MG is built on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone. The fruit comes from soils of sand, clay and galets roulés, a mix that Janasse handles parcel by parcel. Sustainable farming is noted for this bottling, and the magnum format suits the dark 2019 fruit that fills the glass. The first aromatic impression is already Janasse in tone, with black cherry, red plum and a lavender note that feels sun-warmed.
In the cellar, Grenache spends two years in large demi-muids and foudre. After that long élevage, the core of the wine has rounded red-fruit polish. Mourvèdre has a shorter stay in French oak barriques, with a small share of new wood. That barrique detail reads as clove, cured meat and a quiet bourbon-vanilla edge. Syrah marks the blend with violet and black pepper, then the dry 15% palate carries a glossy texture through the finish.
Tasting Notes
In this 2019 XXL magnum, the colour is medium ruby with a dense glow at the core and a brighter red rim that points toward slow development in the bottle. The nose starts with red plum and black cherry beside warm licorice before violet and lavender appear after a few minutes in a broad glass, the way this cuvée rewards air. Black pepper and clove join cured meat and a small bourbon-vanilla note, bringing the Mourvèdre and oak details into view with low savoury spice under the fruit. The palate is full-bodied and muscular, with silky substantial tannins carrying jammy fruit with herbes de Provence and a licorice line through a long finish that stains the cheeks with spice after each sip. Drink from 2024 to 2049.
Food Pairing
Grilled rib-eye is an easy first thought for Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 MG, especially with a rosemary salt crust. Venison with juniper and roasted mushrooms beside a dark cherry sauce draws out the wine's cured-meat note and brings its black pepper into focus. For a regional plate, serve daube Provençale with olives and orange peel, then let the thyme-rich sauce meet the Grenache richness. Aged Comté gives the tannins something firm to grip, and a sheep's milk tomme brings a nutty edge to the wine's clove and plum. Cured saucisson, duck rillettes and charred lamb shoulder all fit the magnum mood, especially after an hour in a decanter when the spice becomes broader and the red plum turns sweeter at the table.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse is the Sabon family estate in Courthézon, a northern Châteauneuf-du-Pape village tied to the domaine’s old La Janasse farm and to vineyards that sit just beyond the village streets. Aimé Sabon founded the domaine in 1973 after the family had sold grapes for many years, and Christophe and Isabelle Sabon now guide the same name through southern Rhone bottlings from Côtes du Rhône to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One concrete Janasse signature is parcel work across very different surfaces, from sandy sites to clay and galets roulés within a mosaic of small holdings that gives the cellar many blending choices. That range is visible in Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 MG, where Grenache warmth has room beside Mourvèdre savour and Syrah pepper in a frame that feels broad from the first pour. The estate became widely known for cuvées such as Vieilles Vignes and Chaupin, and its strongest wines place old-vine Grenache at the centre with garrigue spice moving around it and dark plum depth behind it. When Janasse uses oak, it builds texture and slow integration around the fruit, which fits the two-year Grenache élevage and the brief barrique note on Mourvèdre in this magnum release with a faint vanilla edge.
