Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 is a Grenache-led Rhône red with plum, anise, pepper and long cellar depth from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This is the estate's rare XXL bottling, built from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It feels dark, spicy and broad, with the polished power that Janasse reserves for this cuvée.
About the Wine
Viticulture for Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 starts with certified organic farming in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The XXL 2019 comes from Grenache-led fruit with Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend. The soils named for this bottle are sand, galets roulés and clay-limestone. In the finished wine, the sandy side reads as red plum and violet. The galets roulés register as glossy black cherry and warm stone. The clay-limestone element shows in a cool peppered line. At 15% alcohol, the fruit feels fully ripe from the first smell. The 2019 vintage adds a warm southern register, with anise and garrigue threading through the fruit.
In the cellar, the handling is split by variety. Only 30% of the fruit is destemmed for this cuvée. The Grenache spends two years in larger oak and demi-muids. Mourvèdre sees a shorter stay in French oak barriques, with a small share of new wood. Whole-bunch character appears as gentle grip and spice around the fruit. Syrah adds violet and black pepper around the Grenache core. The small new-oak element leaves a bourbon-vanilla edge beside the wine’s anise and black cherry.
Tasting Notes
On the nose, Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019 opens with red plum and glossy black cherry from the Grenache-led blend. Violet and black pepper come next, then anise, cured meat and a trace of bourbon vanilla from the barrique-aged Mourvèdre. The palate is full-bodied and densely packed, with 15% alcohol folded into sweet dark fruit, licorice and a thick sheet of tannin. Its finish runs long through clove, warm stone and herbes de Provence, then returns to peppered plum after the glass has been set down. Drink 2024-2049.
Food Pairing
A hard-seared ribeye or côte de boeuf meets the wine’s black cherry, pepper and broad Grenache tannin head on, with the XXL fruit holding up to charred fat and pan juices. Venison loin with juniper and a dark game jus picks up the cured-meat note in the Mourvèdre, then pulls out anise and clove from the finish. For a regional plate, choose daube provençale with black olives, orange peel and thyme in a glossy reduced sauce. Aged Comté or tomme de brebis brings out the wine’s smooth texture and warm stone note. Cured saucisson or speck is a strong early-course choice, especially if the bottle has been opened an hour before dinner.
Producer
Domaine de la Janasse is a Sabon family domaine based in Courthézon, and its name comes from the old family farm called La Janasse near the family's vines in the Courthézon sector of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Aimé Sabon created the estate in the 1970s after a period of sending fruit to the local cooperative, then built the domaine around estate bottling, family work and close control of its parcels. The concrete trait to know is its parcel mind, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends assembled from a mosaic of sand, rounded stones and clay-limestone across the appellation and then tasted lot by lot in the cellar. For Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf Du Pape XXL 2019, that parcel range meets a cellar regime that treats Grenache and Mourvèdre separately before the final blend is drawn, which suits a cuvée built on scale. The Grenache spends two years in larger oak and demi-muids, and the Mourvèdre receives a shorter barrique passage with a small new-oak share that leaves spice, polish and a faint vanilla edge. Christophe and Isabelle Sabon now guide wines that carry a generous house style through ripe fruit and smooth tannin, and the 2019 XXL shows that signature in black cherry, peppered plum and warm anise long after swallowing.
