Description

Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a Grenache-led Rhône red with dark fruit, spice and old-vine depth from stony old parcels. It smells of blackberry, black cherry and warm garrigue. The 12-month élevage in foudre and demi-muids gives it breadth and a calm oak frame. Open it slowly if you plan to drink it young.

About the Wine
The Vieilles Vignes 2023 comes from Domaine de la Janasse’s older Châteauneuf-du-Pape holdings. Grenache leads the blend, with Syrah and Mourvèdre adding darker colour and savoury grip. The soils listed for this cuvée are galets roulés, sand and limestone, a mix that fits the wine’s split between plush black fruit and a stony finish. Sustainable farming is noted for this 750 ml bottle, and the dry 15% frame feels honest for a ripe 2023 from Janasse. In the cellar the fruit is partially destemmed, which keeps a gentle herbal thread under the black cherry. Ageing runs for 12 months in 70% foudre and 30% demi-muids. In the glass the oak reads as a frame, with the fruit taking the centre. The foudre side gives broad shoulders and slow oxygen, and the demi-muids add a polished rim to the tannins. There is a faint smoky edge in the glass after swirling.

Tasting Notes
The colour is deep ruby, almost opaque at the core, and the first pour already shows the density of the Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2023. The nose starts with blackberry and black cherry before air brings baked mulberry, roasted garrigue and rose petal from the warm herbal side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape after a few minutes in a large glass. Black pepper and exotic spice run under the fruit, with a smoky dark rock note that recalls the wine’s foudre and demi-muid élevage rather than new oak sweetness. On the palate it is medium-to-full bodied and fleshy, with ultra-fine tannins around a concentrated Grenache-led core and a finish that lengthens through black cherry, spice and mineral heat. Drink 2025-2045.

Food Pairing
The wine’s 15% alcohol and dense black cherry fruit feel right beside food with fat, salt and browned edges, especially when the plate carries herbs. A grilled rib-eye with rosemary butter picks up the pepper and smoke, and venison stew mirrors the darker Mourvèdre note in the blend. For a regional idea pour it with Provençal daube of beef scented with thyme and orange peel, plus black olive from the cooking juices. A plate of saucisson and duck rillettes brings out the smoky edge, then aged Comté pulls the tannins into a nuttier place. Give the Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2023 a broad decanter before dinner, especially if the table includes game or aged cheese and the first glasses are poured young from a cool cellar.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse is a Sabon family domaine based in Courthézon, and its name comes from the old family farm called La Janasse, a specific place that gives the bottle a real family address. The concrete trait to know is the estate’s patchwork of Châteauneuf-du-Pape parcels, with rolled stones, sand and limestone giving the cellar several distinct voices for this Vieilles Vignes blend during selection and élevage. In the Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2023, that range reads as ripe Grenache fruit, a finer floral edge and a limestone snap on the finish after twenty minutes in the glass. Janasse has long been associated with generous fruit and polished tannins, and this old-vine cuvée carries that signature through black cherry density, fine grip and a smooth foudre-shaped frame in the 2023. The family’s use of large foudres and demi-muids for this wine is a useful detail, as the oak leaves breadth and a quiet smoky rim around the fruit through the middle palate and finish. The partial destemming also marks the bottle in a very practical way, with a peppery herbal thread that sits neatly beside the Mourvèdre spice, the dry 15% frame and the long finish after air.
