Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2018 MG is a Grenache-led Rhône red with dark fruit, cocoa and smoke in magnum for the cellar. It feels deep from the first pour. Raspberry, blackberry and anise sit over a darker line of cocoa and smoke. The 1500 ml bottle gives this old-vine cuvée a calm pace.
About the Wine
Fruit for Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2018 MG comes from old vines planted to Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre on the estate’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape holdings. Janasse farms with sustainable certification, and this cuvée pulls together the appellation’s galets roulés, sandy soils and limestone. The stone and sand register in the wine as ripe raspberry skin, blackberry flesh and a dry crushed-rock edge. Vieilles Vignes is the important phrase here. The fruit tastes concentrated, with an old-root feel behind the ripe skin and spice.
After fermentation, the 2018 Vieilles Vignes was aged for 18 to 24 months in a combination of large French oak foudres and older barrels. That élevage is visible in the cocoa, anise and smoke that frame the Grenache-led fruit. The oak reads as a savoury outline, led by cedar, cocoa and warm spice. At 15% alcohol, this dry red has the scale and warmth expected from the old-vine Janasse style. In the 1500 ml bottle, the wine evolves slowly in the glass and keeps its blackberry scent for a long time.
Tasting Notes
The glass opens dark violet, with a scent of black raspberry, blackberry liqueur and violet pastille from the first pour of this magnum. Anise, incense and cocoa move through the fruit, and a smoke note gathers after a few minutes in the glass. The palate is full and velvety, with boysenberry, salted liquorice and dark chocolate wrapped around the 2018 wine’s warm Châteauneuf core. Ripe tannins feel broad and polished, then a crushed-stone edge gives the finish a salty grip that keeps echoing after the fruit fades. This Domaine de la Janasse Vieilles Vignes has the depth expected from old vines in a large bottle, with enough structure for a long rest and enough open raspberry fruit to make a decant rewarding now. Drink 2023-2040.
Food Pairing
Serve this 2018 Domaine de la Janasse magnum with a thick côte de boeuf, grilled over vine cuttings if you can, and let the char pick up the wine’s smoke and cocoa. Game takes the darker side of the Vieilles Vignes, especially venison loin with juniper or wild boar shoulder braised until the sauce turns dark and sticky. For a regional table, choose daube Provençale with black olives and orange peel, then keep the sauce rich enough for the wine’s 15% frame and liquorice finish. Aged Comté, mature Cantal or a firm sheep’s milk tomme bring out the cocoa and salted-anise notes that mark this Janasse bottling. Give the bottle a wide decanter before the food arrives, and the anise and dark berry notes will expand with air.
Producer
One concrete strength at Domaine de la Janasse is the spread of its old vines across very different Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils, from sun-catching galets roulés to pale sand and limestone parcels that give this cuvée several textures. The estate takes its name from the La Janasse farm near Courthézon, and Aimé Sabon began bottling wines under the domaine label in the 1970s after years of family grape growing and local selling. That parcel base shapes the Vieilles Vignes cuvée in a direct way, with Grenache giving raspberry richness and the Syrah and Mourvèdre adding blackberry, smoke and spice to the finish. Christophe and Isabelle Sabon have kept the domaine closely tied to powerful old-vine expressions, and this 2018 magnum shows their hand in its polished tannins, ripe core and long cocoa finish. For this bottle, the 18 to 24 months in large French oak foudres and older barrels leaves the fruit broad and firmly framed with cedar and cocoa across the finish. The last impression in the glass is very Janasse Vieilles Vignes, as black fruit and anise settle over warm stones and dark chocolate in a slow fading line after the last sip.
