Description
Dom Pérignon Coffret Vintage 2017 & 2018 is a rare two-bottle collection that captures a pivotal moment in the history of one of Champagne’s most celebrated names. The set brings together the final Dom Pérignon vintage created under cellar master Richard Geoffroy and the first vintage overseen by his successor, Vincent Chaperon—offering both a fascinating comparison and a distinctive piece of Champagne history.
Tasting Notes
The 2017 vintage is intense and characterful, with ripe citrus and stone fruit complemented by brioche, toasted nuts, subtle smoke and a taut mineral edge. Its lively acidity brings balance to the mature fruit, creating a Champagne with both depth and energy. Antonio Galloni awarded the vintage 98 points from Vinous.
The 2018 vintage comes from a warmer, more generous growing season and presents a more open, fruit-driven expression. Expect fuller texture, creamy bubbles and generous stone-fruit flavours, supported by the precision and freshness associated with Dom Pérignon. James Suckling awarded the vintage 99 points. Both wines are capable of further development in a good cellar, while also offering considerable complexity today.
Production
Produced in Champagne from the classic blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Dom Pérignon is made only in declared vintage years and reflects the character of each harvest. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before pressing and fermentation, followed by a second fermentation in bottle and extended ageing on the lees. The 2017 and 2018 vintages are especially noteworthy as they mark the transition between two generations of Dom Pérignon cellar masters.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, preferably in a white-wine glass that allows the aromas and texture to develop. The 2017 pairs beautifully with oysters, shellfish, roast poultry, smoked fish and dishes featuring truffle or toasted nuts, while the broader 2018 can complement richer seafood, lobster, creamy poultry dishes and mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but carefully pouring the Champagne into a suitable decanter shortly before serving can reveal additional aromatic depth; opening both bottles side by side makes for an especially rewarding tasting.
Producer
Champagne Moët & Chandon’s Dom Pérignon is named after the Benedictine monk traditionally associated with the development of quality sparkling wine in Champagne. The prestige cuvée was first released in the 1930s and has since become an international benchmark for vintage Champagne, known for its emphasis on long ageing, precision and the expression of individual harvests. The 2017 vintage was the last under Richard Geoffroy, who guided Dom Pérignon for almost three decades, while 2018 marked Vincent Chaperon’s first vintage as cellar master after years of working alongside him.
