Condrieu Les Chaillées de l’Enfer by Domaine Georges Vernay is a remarkable expression of Viognier from one of the Rhône Valley’s most respected estates. Known for its richness, perfume, and finesse, this 2010 vintage comes from a historic appellation celebrated for producing some of France’s most distinctive white wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a golden hue that hints at its maturity and concentration. The nose is often highly expressive, with layered aromas of apricot, peach, honeysuckle, citrus peel, and a subtle mineral lift, developing more complex notes of spice and dried flowers with age.
On the palate, the wine is usually full-bodied and silky, balancing ripe stone fruit character with freshness and precision. The finish is long and elegant, with a sense of purity that can continue to evolve beautifully over time, though at this stage it is likely best enjoyed for its complexity and harmony.
Production
This wine comes from the steep, granite-rich slopes of Condrieu, where the poor soils and dramatic terrain help produce intensely aromatic and concentrated Viognier. The grapes are typically harvested by hand due to the challenging hillside vineyards, and vinification is carried out with great care to preserve the varietal’s delicate perfume and texture.
Food & Serving
Serve this wine slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to showcase its aromatics and balance. It pairs beautifully with shellfish, lobster, roasted poultry, creamy sauces, Asian-inspired dishes, and rich soft cheeses. Decanting for a short period can help open up its bouquet, especially in a mature vintage like 2010.
Producer
Domaine Georges Vernay is one of the benchmark producers in Condrieu and a name closely associated with the revival and prestige of Viognier in the region. Founded in the mid-20th century and later led by the visionary Christine Vernay, the estate has earned international acclaim for wines of elegance, precision, and exceptional terroir expression.
