Cocito Barbaresco Baluchin Riserva 2009 – Magnum 1,5 L

Cocito’s 2009 Barbaresco Baluchin Riserva is a limited-production, single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the steep Baluchin site in Neive, presented in a generous 1.5-litre magnum. Rated 94 points by Vinous and 92 by Wine Advocate, it reflects the ambition of a vineyard replanted by Ezio Cocito in 1996.

Tasting Notes
Mature and generous, the wine offers cherry and other red-fruit aromas alongside dried rose, spice, liquorice, tar and earthy notes. The palate is full-bodied and persistent, balancing Nebbiolo’s distinctive structure with the elegance expected of Barbaresco.

Production
The Nebbiolo comes from the Baluchin vineyard in Bric Micca, Neive, at around 380 metres above sea level on steep slopes with south and south-west exposure. Ezio Cocito replanted the site with Nebbiolo in 1996. Details of the harvest and vinification are not provided; production is very limited, with assistance from Andrea Rivetti at La Spinetta’s facilities.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C with slow-cooked beef, roast lamb, game or mushroom dishes; aged hard cheeses are another fitting match. As a mature wine, decant gently shortly before serving if needed to separate any sediment, and avoid leaving it open for too long.

Cocito’s story is closely connected with the Rivetti family behind La Spinetta. The Baluchin Riserva is the producer’s ambitious expression of its Neive vineyard, made with assistance from Andrea Rivetti. The 2009 vintage received 94 points from Vinous and 92 from Wine Advocate.
