Description

Clementin de Pape Clément Pessac-Léognan Blanc 2018 is the refined white second wine of the historic Château Pape Clément, one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates. Crafted from a classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, it offers a polished, modern expression of Pessac-Léognan’s famed dry whites. This 2018 vintage delivers impressive complexity and freshness, capturing both the estate’s savoir-faire and the region’s unique gravel terroir at a more accessible price point than the grand vin.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Clementin de Pape Clément Blanc shows a bright, pale straw color with glints of green, suggesting both youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with lifted aromas of citrus zest, white peach and pear, supported by floral hints of acacia and jasmine, and subtle notes of fresh herbs, wet stone and a gentle touch of oak spice. On the palate, this wine is medium to full-bodied with a striking balance between ripe fruit and crisp acidity. Sauvignon Blanc brings tension and energy with lemon, grapefruit and lime leaf, while Sémillon adds texture and roundness, contributing notes of stone fruit and a creamy mid-palate. Muscadelle offers a delicate aromatic lift, with hints of blossom and exotic fruit. The oak is finely integrated, lending a discreet creaminess and a touch of vanilla without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long, saline and mineral-driven, suggesting a few years of positive evolution in bottle. Enjoy now for its vibrancy, or cellar for 3–7 years to see the development of more honeyed, nutty nuances.

Production
Sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Pessac-Léognan on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Clementin de Pape Clément Blanc benefits from a terroir famed for producing some of the region’s most elegant dry whites. The vineyards are typically farmed with great attention to detail, with careful canopy management to preserve aromatic freshness and achieve optimal ripeness in Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle. Grapes are harvested by hand in small parcels, allowing for selective picking at ideal maturity. In the cellar, gentle pressing and precise temperature control during fermentation help protect the pure, vibrant aromatics of the varieties. A portion of the wine is aged in French oak barrels (often with a mix of new and used wood) on fine lees, with regular stirring (bâtonnage) to build texture and complexity while preserving the wine’s tension and mineral character.

Food & Serving
Clementin de Pape Clément Blanc 2018 is a versatile food wine, particularly well-suited to refined seafood and delicate white meat dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallops, grilled sea bass, turbot, lobster, or sushi and sashimi, as well as roast chicken with herbs, veal in light cream sauces, or asparagus and goat cheese tarts. Fresh goat cheese, young Comté, and semi-soft cheeses also work very well with its bright acidity and subtle oak. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its aromatics and texture; a brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth.

Producer
Château Pape Clément, located in Pessac-Léognan just outside Bordeaux, is one of the oldest wine estates in the region, with viticultural roots dating back to the early 14th century. The property is named after Pope Clement V, who once owned the estate and played a key role in its early renown. Today, under modern stewardship, Château Pape Clément is regarded as a flagship producer of both red and white Bordeaux, known for meticulous vineyard work and a quality-driven philosophy. Clementin de Pape Clément is the estate’s second wine, created to offer earlier-drinking elegance and accessibility while reflecting the same terroir and exacting standards that have earned the château critical acclaim and a prominent place among the great names of Graves and Pessac-Léognan.
