Description
A rare 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese from the celebrated Zeltinger Sonnenuhr vineyard on the Mosel, produced by Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer of Schloss Lieser. Made from exceptionally ripe, botrytised Riesling grapes, this historic sweet wine offers remarkable concentration, balance and longevity—a true collector’s bottle for lovers of mature German Riesling.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its age and extraordinary concentration. Its expressive bouquet reveals honey, ripe peach, apricot and citrus, complemented by the complex, subtly savoury notes that develop in mature Riesling.
On the palate, it is rich, sweet and full-bodied, yet lifted by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and harmonious. A delicate mineral character carries through to the long, persistent finish. With more than four decades of bottle age, this is a mature wine with considerable complexity; provided it has been carefully stored, it may continue to evolve beautifully over the coming years.
Production
Trockenbeerenauslese represents one of Germany’s most precious Prädikat categories. The grapes are harvested at an exceptionally late stage, often individually selected after being affected by Botrytis cinerea, or noble rot. This naturally dehydrates the berries and concentrates their sugars, acidity and aromatic compounds. Sourced from Zeltinger Sonnenuhr in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, the wine reflects the distinctive character associated with the Mosel’s steep, mineral-rich vineyard landscapes. The 1976 vintage was then matured in bottle, allowing its intense fruit and sweetness to develop into greater depth and complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It is excellent as an aperitif or alongside foie gras, blue cheese and refined desserts such as cheesecake, crème brûlée, fruit tarts or dark chocolate creations. Decanting is not essential, but carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and serving it gently can help separate any natural sediment. The 0.7-litre bottle also makes an exceptional gift for a special occasion.
Producer
Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer is associated with Schloss Lieser, a historic Mosel estate known for producing elegant Riesling from distinguished vineyard sites. The Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is one of the region’s renowned locations, and this 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese offers a rare opportunity to experience the estate’s sweet-wine tradition alongside the remarkable ageing potential of Mosel Riesling.
