Description
A rare 1971 Riesling Beerenauslese from Graacher Himmelreich, one of the Mosel’s celebrated vineyard sites, produced under Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer of Schloss Lieser. More than five decades of bottle age have given this noble sweet wine a remarkable place among mature German Rieslings, combining concentrated fruit, elegant sweetness and refreshing acidity.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous golden-yellow colour, with the depth and warmth expected from a mature Beerenauslese. Its aromatic profile is rich and expressive, led by ripe peach, apricot and honey, with hints of candied citrus emerging with time in the glass.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, creamy and beautifully concentrated, yet lifted by the lively acidity characteristic of Riesling from the Mosel. The finish is long and intense, leaving notes of citrus and ripe orchard fruit. Although already mature and rewarding to drink, a well-stored bottle may continue to develop further complexity; as with any wine of this age, its condition depends greatly on provenance and storage.
Production
Beerenauslese is made from individually selected, naturally overripe grapes, often affected by noble rot, which concentrates sugars, fruit and flavour. The steep slate-influenced vineyards around Graach help preserve the freshness needed to balance this richness. While detailed harvest and vinification records for this historic bottle are not provided, the style is defined by meticulous selection and a careful fermentation that retains the wine’s natural sweetness and aromatic intensity.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled, ideally at around 8–10°C, allowing the wine to warm slightly in the glass as its aromas unfold. It is a natural partner for crème brûlée, tiramisu, fruit-based desserts and ripe stone fruit, while its acidity also makes it a fine accompaniment to foie gras or blue cheese. Decanting is not usually necessary, but a careful transfer to a clean decanter may be worthwhile if the bottle has developed sediment; otherwise, open gently and pour slowly.
Producer
Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer is associated with Schloss Lieser, a historic Mosel estate whose wines reflect the region’s steep vineyards and Riesling tradition. This bottle comes from an earlier era of the estate’s history and offers a rare glimpse of mature German Prädikatswein from the 1971 vintage. Its age, provenance and Beerenauslese classification make it especially appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of historic Mosel wines.
