Description

Cheval des Andes 2020 brings together Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec in a distinctive Mendoza blend, with a small return of Petit Verdot after its absence from the wine since 2016. It was the second vintage under winemaker Gérald Gabillet and, in a notably early year, the harvest began in late February.

Production
The Malbec came from Las Compuertas and Altamira, where the fruit showed contrasting conditions: the clay-rich soils of Las Compuertas appeared to help preserve freshness, while vines in Altamira faced greater stress. For the first time, grapes were transported in refrigerated trucks, and picking began at 6 a.m. to help maintain precision. The final blend is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. It matured for an average of 15 months, with individual lots aged between 12 and 18 months, in a combination of 225-litre barrels, 400-litre barrels and 2,500-litre foudres; half of the oak vessels were new.

Food & Serving
Try it with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms and herbs. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for about an hour before drinking to give the wine time to open.

Producer
Cheval des Andes is a Mendoza project born from a partnership between Château Cheval Blanc and Terrazas de los Andes, bringing together Bordeaux winemaking experience and the region’s high-altitude vineyards. The estate is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blends, and this vintage reflects a continued focus on freshness and precision in the vineyards and cellar.
