A beautifully composed Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, Vieux Donjon’s 2023 cuvée shows the depth and precision that have made the estate such a respected name in the Southern Rhône. Built on a classic blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, it offers both richness and lift, with the kind of structure that gives white Châteauneuf-du-Pape its reputation for finesse and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this typically shows a pale golden hue with a bright, polished sheen. The nose is expressive and layered, often moving between white flowers, stone fruit, citrus zest, pear, and subtle hints of herbs, almond, and a gentle mineral edge.
On the palate, it tends to be broad yet balanced, combining ripe fruit, creamy texture, and refreshing acidity. The finish is long and savory, with enough concentration to reward cellaring for several years, developing more complexity and honeyed, nutty nuances over time.
Production
Produced in the Rhône’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where galets roulés, clay, and sandy soils help preserve heat while supporting freshness and aromatic detail. The blend reflects the classic white grape varieties of the region, and harvest is typically done by hand to protect fruit integrity. Vinification is generally focused on preserving purity and texture, with careful fermentation and aging that allow the individual grapes and terroir to remain clearly expressed.
Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for roast poultry, grilled lobster, sea bass, scallops, creamy risotto, and dishes with mushrooms or fennel. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider a short decant if the wine is showing especially reserved on opening; otherwise, simply allow it a little time in the glass to open up.
Producer
Vieux Donjon is a highly regarded family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for its traditional approach and consistent quality. The domaine has earned a strong reputation in the region for producing wines of balance, authenticity, and age-worthiness, and it is widely respected among collectors and Rhône enthusiasts for staying true to the character of the appellation.
