Description

Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Blanc 2013 is a Grenache Blanc from the Rhône, rich with apricot, honeyed peach and old-foudre spice and depth. This is the rare white side of Rayas. It has golden weight, quiet power and that sandy Châteauneuf signature the estate has made famous.

About the Wine
Château Rayas farms organically, and its white Reserve comes from one of the most singular addresses in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate’s parcels are rooted in deep sand over clay, a Rayas signature in an appellation often pictured through river stones. In the 2013 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Blanc, Grenache Blanc carries a ripe southern glow with a quiet mineral drag. The fruit feels sunlit and low-toned from the vineyard, with apricot skin and dried honeysuckle already suggested before the cellar notes arrive. Vinification follows the calm old-cellar rhythm that defines Rayas. The 2013 Reserve Blanc was aged in large old French oak foudres for roughly 12 to 18 months. Those vessels leave a gentle line of vanilla, baking spice and polished wood around the wine’s stone fruit. The wine is dry, and its 14.5% alcohol sits inside a silky frame. In the glass, the élevage reads as a faint sweet-spice glow at the edge of ripe peach.

Tasting Notes
The colour is deep gold, and it already hints at the scale of this rare Rayas white before the first swirl. The nose moves through apricot compote, ripe peach and honeysuckle, then settles into vanilla pod and the soft baking-spice note that points to long élevage in old foudre. On the palate, the 2013 Château Rayas Reserve Blanc is full-bodied and satin-textured with layered stone fruit and almond skin. A dry mineral line appears after the fruit, and it carries a faint saline edge that keeps returning with the old-foudre spice and warm peach depth. Drink 2025-2035.

Food Pairing
Pour the Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Blanc 2013 with roast turbot in beurre blanc, where the wine’s peach and vanilla tones meet browned butter and firm flesh. Scallops seared in hazelnut butter are a strong match, especially with a little fennel or orange zest on the plate. For a regional table, choose a Provençal bourride with aioli or brandade de morue from Nîmes; the dry finish cuts into salt cod and garlic cream. Poultry can go richer here, so try roast guinea fowl with morels or chicken with tarragon and cream. Soft cheeses suit the texture, especially young Brillat-Savarin or a ripe goat cheese served with toasted walnuts.

Producer
Château Rayas has built one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most recognisable identities around sandy, tree-fringed parcels set among quiet lanes in a pocket of the appellation marked by pale soil and shade, a setting that feels intimate by Châteauneuf standards. That specific ground matters for the Reserve Blanc 2013, where Grenache Blanc tastes broad and golden, then leaves a powdery mineral trail that feels like the dust of the Rayas vineyard after air. The domaine is now run by Emmanuel Reynaud, nephew of the late Jacques Reynaud, and the same family stands behind Château de Fonsalette and Château des Tours in the southern Rhône. Rayas releases tiny quantities by modern fine-wine standards, and the white Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Blanc sits among the bottles that many merchants see only as a line on strict allocations for older vintages in export markets and private cellars. The cellar language is patient and old-fashioned in the best sense, with large foudres, long élevage and a preference for texture that unfolds slowly after the cork is pulled over dinner. Open a mature bottle and the estate signature is specific: golden southern fruit, old-wood spice and a sandy finish that seems to settle on the tongue like fine dust after the final sip of this rare white cuvée.
