Description
Chateau Rayas’ Chateau des Tours Côtes-du-Rhône Grande Réserve Blanc 2014 is a refined, characterful white from one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered family estates. Crafted in limited quantities, it showcases the quiet precision and authenticity that have made the Rayas name legendary among collectors. This 2014 vintage offers a beautifully evolved expression of southern Rhône white grapes, balancing generosity of fruit with freshness and understated complexity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2014 Grande Réserve Blanc typically shows a deep straw to light golden hue, reflecting both its age and traditional élevage. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe stone fruits, yellow apple, and pear are intertwined with notes of wild herbs, fennel, acacia blossom, and a subtle nutty, beeswax complexity that comes with careful bottle age.
On the palate, this is a textured yet finely poised wine, with a rounded, almost glycerol mouthfeel carried by a fresh, saline spine. Expect flavors of baked pear, white peach, citrus peel, and gentle spice, supported by hints of almond, honey, and dried herbs. The finish is long and savory, with a delicate bitterness reminiscent of citrus pith and anise that adds grip and sophistication. Well-stored bottles of 2014 can drink beautifully now, with the wine sitting in a sweet spot of maturity, but it can often continue to develop tertiary nuances over the next few years depending on cellar conditions.
Production
Chateau des Tours’ Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc comes from estate vineyards in the southern Rhône, on classic sun-drenched terroirs of clay, sand, and limestone that lend both ripeness and freshness. Typical for the domaine, the blend centers around traditional Rhône white varieties such as Grenache Blanc and Clairette, often with small proportions of other local grapes, all harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard. Vinification is deliberately traditional and low-intervention, with gentle pressing, fermentation at moderate temperatures, and aging in a mix of neutral vessels that preserve the natural texture and aromatics of the fruit rather than masking them with overt oak.
Food & Serving
This Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with Mediterranean-inspired dishes: think grilled sea bass with herbs, roasted chicken with lemon and thyme, seared scallops, or pasta with cream, mushrooms, and tarragon. It also works well alongside richer vegetable dishes such as fennel gratin, ratatouille, or roasted root vegetables with olive oil and herbs. Serve slightly cool, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the texture and aromatics to fully open. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can be beneficial, especially for bottles that have been cellared, helping the wine shed any initial reduction and reveal its full aromatic range.
Producer
Chateau Rayas is one of the most iconic names in the Rhône Valley, famed for its ethereal Châteauneuf-du-Pape and for the distinct, character-driven wines produced at its associated estates, including Chateau des Tours. Under the stewardship of the Reynaud family, these domaines have earned a cult following for their traditional methods, low yields, and unwavering focus on expressing terroir. Situated in the southern Rhône, Chateau des Tours has become particularly admired for crafting Côtes-du-Rhône wines with a depth and personality far beyond their appellation, making them sought-after bottles for enthusiasts who appreciate authenticity and age-worthy, distinctive Rhône expressions.
