Description
Château Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville 1990 is a classic Pauillac and a celebrated example of a “super second” Bordeaux: a Second Growth with the concentration, pedigree and longevity to rival many First Growths. Produced from carefully selected fruit, this mature vintage combines the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance that has made the 1990 Bordeaux vintage so highly regarded.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby colour with distinctive brick-red hues at the rim, reflecting its considerable age. Its bouquet is complex and beautifully developed, offering red berries, ripe blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, lead pencil, crushed rose petals and subtle incense, with a gentle roasted character adding further depth.
On the palate, the wine is rich and finely balanced, with supple, fully integrated tannins and a poised freshness. Mature fruit is complemented by savoury, earthy and mineral notes, while the long finish retains Pauillac’s characteristic tension and precision. The 1990 is now in its mature drinking window—likely at or close to its peak—and is best enjoyed in the near term rather than held for many more years.
Production
The vineyards of Pauillac are shaped by the region’s famed gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and encourage deep-rooted vines while retaining warmth for late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected according to grape variety, vine age and individual vineyard plot. Fermentation takes place in vats, with an extended maceration of around three to four weeks to extract colour, flavour and structure. After malolactic fermentation, the selected lots are matured in oak barrels before being blended through extensive tasting trials, allowing the final wine to express both the vintage and the estate’s distinctive character.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to settle. Decant for around 30–60 minutes, taking care with any sediment, although a mature bottle should not be left exposed to air for too long. Its depth and savoury complexity make it an excellent partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, fillet steak, beef Wellington and richly flavoured mushroom dishes.
Producer
Château Pichon-Longueville Baron traces its history to 1689 and was divided in the mid-19th century following the death of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville, with the estate’s two sons receiving what became Pichon Baron. Both Pichon estates were classified as Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. After a period of decline, the château was acquired by AXA in the 1980s, prompting major investment in the vineyards and winemaking facilities, including stricter grape selection, hand harvesting and the introduction of a second wine. Today, Pichon Baron is regarded as one of Bordeaux’s most accomplished “super seconds,” renowned for precision, meticulous vineyard work and wines of exceptional depth and longevity.
