Description
Château Musar 1967 is a remarkable piece of Lebanese wine history, offering the rare opportunity to experience a mature vintage from one of the Bekaa Valley’s most celebrated estates. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, it combines deep regional character with remarkable longevity and complexity.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby-red colour, likely showing garnet and brick hues at the rim as befits its age. Its mature bouquet is layered with black fruit, warm spices, leather and tobacco, alongside the savoury, earthy nuances that develop in a traditionally made, long-lived red.
Full-bodied and complex on the palate, the 1967 vintage balances mature fruit with refreshing acidity and a long, persistent finish. At this stage, it should be approached as a mature wine and enjoyed for its tertiary character rather than youthful power. Its condition and remaining vitality will depend greatly on provenance and storage, so it is best opened with care and enjoyed soon after serving.
Production
The wine originates in the Bekaa Valley, where elevated vineyards, warm sunny days and cooler nights help preserve acidity and build concentration. Château Musar’s classic red blend brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, and the 1967 vintage was matured for at least 30 months in oak barrels. Details of the specific harvesting and vinification methods for this historic bottle are limited, but the wine reflects the estate’s traditional, age-oriented approach.
Food & Serving
This mature red is well suited to richly flavoured dishes such as roast or grilled lamb, venison and other game, as well as slow-cooked meats and mature cheeses. Serve lightly cool at approximately 16–18°C. Because of its age, decant gently only if necessary to remove sediment, and consider tasting it shortly after opening; an extended decant may cause a fragile mature wine to fade.
Producer
Founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, Château Musar has become Lebanon’s most internationally recognised winery and a leading ambassador for the wines of the Bekaa Valley. The estate is particularly admired for its distinctive, traditionally styled wines, which can develop for decades in bottle. The 1967 vintage is a rare historical release and a compelling expression of Château Musar’s long-standing reputation for producing exceptionally age-worthy wines.
